View Full Version : What's the rule on wearing white before Memorial Day?
I live in Texas where it is usually warm almost all year long. I've noticed lots of women wearing white lately. What's everyone's take on wearing white before Memorial day? Have the "white rules" changed?

I saw on Oprah not to wear white shoes or pants until after may day long weekend. Something like that.

I always thought that too, but yesterday I saw tons of women wearing white pants and/or white shoes. I thought that someone must have changed the rules and forgot to send me the notice. LOL.

There was a time when you didn't wear white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. But, with all the "winter whites" available nowadays, that really doesn't apply anymore...

Supposedly, in the South where I grew up, you could wear white after Easter and not after Labor Day. This is probably due to the fact that it gets warmer faster here (Today it's probably about 80 degrees). So if you waited until Memorial Day, you'd have a lot of warm weather where you couldn't wear white. However, I think a lot of women aren't paying attention to the rule at all now, and if you think about it, it is kinda silly. I mean there's nothing morally or ethically wrong with wearing white at any time.
I personally don't wear white shoes at any time, but that's because I'm so hard on shoes and my feet are so long, I don't want to draw attention to them.

I think that rule got done away with - esp. if you are in a warm climate! I might take it into consideration if I was going to a dressy thing but for casual out and about I'd wear it :)

...but I'd wear white if you want to. I hate rules when it comes to clothes...makeup..hair, anything like that. There are always the latest trends etc but I pretty much wear whatever looks good on me or whatever I feel like. I think I wear white all year. :D
Good to know! LadyGodiva, that was especially helpful to know about the "rules in the South". I'm a transplant from Chicago to Houston and am still trying to get the hang of everything down here. LOL. :D

Hi Lara. I read in the past year that the former rules of wearing white don't really apply anymore. Nonetheless, I still follow the rules. I was taught in finishing school that you were only to wear white (shoes, pants, & purses) between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but that the rule could be broken in regards to Easter. Winter white can be worn from Labor to Memorial Day. You know I'm still stuck here in Illinois, but thank God it is finally spring! I'm starting to change out the warm weather clothes for the spring and summer stuff. Yippee!! It was a long winter.

I didnt know there was a rule about Memorial Day. The rule of thumb that I've always heard is not to wear white after Labor Day, and not to start wearing white again until right after Easter.
